A free race for the benefit of the town. The positive energy from both the locals and the runners was overwhelming. Running can be such an individual and selfish endeavor - and this race turns it upside down. You’re running for the people of the town, to keep the town library open, to help local businesses survive a down economy, to bring energy and hope to a region that has been cast aside. And in return... an amazingly tough, hilly, beautiful course through the wilds of Maine, surrounded by crazy cheering folks handing out cookies, beverages, and love. This race is hard. It is cold. It snowed 10 inches the night after the race. But it might just change your life.
Book early, lodging options are limited. Stay as close to downtown/Penobscot Ave as possible

Review
Its supporting a little town in Northern Maine....the locals are extremely friendly and supportive in all aspects of the race, from water/food stops to opening homes for extra lodging and everything in between.
Race Tips
Book early. Local marathon sites, for example, Facebook, provide extra help and "ins" with the locals. Many people are willing to rent rooms and accommodations from their own homes.
I heard about this FREE race in Northern Maine, so I signed up. I then found out the reasons behind the free race, and spent an extra day in Millinocket to help provide an economic boost to the struggling town.
Race Tips
Be prepared for an unsupported race, get overwhlemed my the amount of support... and the Fireball shot and cookies!
